International Automakers Detail Growing American Presence

AIAM Presents Annual Data on U.S. Investment

The Association of International Automobile Manufacturers (AIAM) today announced U.S. investment by its members -- international automakers such as Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota -- rose to $35.5 billion in 2006. AIAM's annual investment and economic update also found that its members currently employ 92,500 Americans and support an annual payroll of $6.3 billion. Last year, AIAM members built 3.4 million cars and trucks in the United States, accounting for 31 percent of all U.S. production. Parts and materials purchases supporting this production topped $52.8 billion.

"Our data shows that the U.S. auto industry is strong," declared Michael Stanton, president and chief executive officer of AIAM. "The companies of AIAM continue to invest in America, building new factories and creating well- paying manufacturing jobs."

AIAM member market share in the United States now stands at 37.7 percent and is supported by a total of 24 U.S. production facilities as well as more than 7,400 dealers. Fifty-four percent of all of the automobiles and trucks AIAM members sell in the United States are now built in the United States. Seventy-four percent of all vehicles sold in the United States by AIAM members are built in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

"The companies of AIAM are continuing their U.S. growth and furthering their status as a key component of the U.S. automobile industry," said Stanton. "Our members plan to invest another $5.1 billion and create 11,000 more U.S. jobs by 2009. We are building the cars and trucks Americans want to buy -- and we're doing it right here in the United States."
